Abstract (AB)Drip irrigation was first used in Mauritius in 1973. In the last two years there has been a big increase in interest in drip irrigation as a method of increasing the yields of sugar cane and other crops. Drip irrigation has many advantages when compared to other types of irrigation, however certain disadvantages such as clogging should not be overlooked. There are many factors that should be taken into consideration when selecting, designing or purchasing a drip system. Although a large number of research and pilot drip schemes are now in operation it will be several years before the true potential of drip irrigation in Mauritius to be ascertained.
