Abstract (AB)Since 1989, leaf scald (Xanthomonas albilineans) has been prevalent in sugarcane variety M 695/69. A precise assessment of the level of infection was hampered by the latent nature of the disease, physical tangling of stalks in the variety and pre-harvest burning of fields. Stalk-blot on XAS selective medium was adopted to detect the bacterium. A sample of 25 stalks was collected per hectare to quantify disease incidence. Forty-one of the 57 fields surveyed were infected with a peak stalk incidence (48 percent) in an 8th ratoon crop. The disease was present in all sectors of the island with a higher proportion of infected fields in the east and south. Stalk incidence as high as 28 percent was recorded in plant cane indicating that infected cuttings were the primary source of the disease. Although the highest number of infected stalks was found in older ratoons, a correlation between disease incidence and stage of crop cycle was not observed. Furthermore, no relationship was evident between level of infection by leaf scald and altitude, soil type, rainfall and irrigation regime respectively. The use of the stalk-blot method to quantify leaf scald incidence and distribution in Mauritius is discussed. Serotyping of isolates of X. albilineans collected from M 695/69 during the sampling showed serovar I (Mascarene serotype) to predominante over serovar II (African serotype). Of the 79 isolates characterized, 77 belonged to serovar I and only two belonged to serovar II. For isolates collected in nurseries and commercial fields in varieties other than
