Abstract (AB)	In Mauritius, the results of initial drip irrigation schemes were variable owing to lack of expertise in their design, operation and management. A comprehensive research project was undertaken by the Mauritius Sugar Industry Research Institute, the Institute of Hydrology and the Natural Resources Institute, and the present book has been produced in order to provide one means of transferring research recommendations to the cane grower and, in particular, to the field operator of drip systems. After an introduction, the next section is concerned with design of schemes and discusses the components of a drip irrigation system and selection of equipment. There follow sections on installation and operation of the system, the latter discussing cane water requirements and irrigation control, etc., as well as fertilizer application, chlorination and use of a root inhibitor to prevent blockage of emitters and orifices. The final section discusses system maintenance, both general principles and maintenance of filters, chemical and fertilizer injectors, distribution systems and riser assemblies, and driplines. Maintenance during the harvest and off-season is discussed as is record keeping. The manual will be a valuable aid to any cane grower seeking to obtain maximum benefit and longevity from a drip irrigation system.
