Abstract (AB)Six biparental crosses, each represented by 62 genotypes were planted in a subhumid environment with drip-irrigation (ETC: 1,358 mm) and without irrigation. Results were obtained at harvest of plant cane and second ratoon. Field Brix and cane diameter were unaltered significantly by water regimes. Cane number and number of internodes were reduced by water stress especially in the plant cane crop. Stalk height and mean length of internodes were the most severely reduced characters in unirrigated conditions. Both family mean and the genotypes within families were contrastingly different for all the characters studied. Although family x treatment interaction was not significant for cane number and number of internodes, some families suffered a greater reduction in the expression of these characters in unirrigated conditions. The lower reduction in cane number in vigorous families was often associated with smaller intervarietal variation, pointing to the possibilities of performing family selection for this character under drought conditions. Family x treatment interaction was not significant for cane height and length of internodes. Genotype x teratment interaction within families were low for the characters studied. However, many varieties in several families behaved differently across treatments for cane number and cane height pointing to the need for selecting for this character under drought conditions.
