Abstract (AB)In the sugarcane breeding programme at MSIRI, varieties are evaluated through selection and those which have proved to be the best ones are released for commercial cultivation after 12-14 years. The preliminary stages of selection programme are very important since the selected population will serve as a basis for further selection stages. Therefore an efficient selection strategy need to be used at the preliminary stages. This study aims at reviewing the selection method and criteria presently used at the MSIRI at the single stool stage (stage 2) by evaluating the progenies at this stage using data for the years 1987 to 1992. The evaluation of crosses using selection rates are also reviewed.
