Abstract (AB)The severity of leaf scald disease of sugar cane in different countries depends on the following factors: proportion of susceptible varieties under cultivation and their degree of susceptibility, amount of inoculum and virulence of aggressiveness of the pathogen, and environmental effects on disease spread and has parasite intraction. The importance of these factors in relation to the sporadic nature of the disease are discussed. The cultivation of highly susceptible varieties in areas where the disease is potentially dangerous should be avoided.
