| Sugarcane cultivation is the main agricultural activity in Mauritius and contributes to about 30 per cent of net earnings. Sugar is sold primarily on preferential European Union markets at remunerative prices. Total production has been declining primarily because of abandonment of cane cultivation which has been partly offset higher sugar yield/ha. The industry has embarked on a programme of increasing productivity per unit area, reducing costs of production and diversifying both within sugar and in crops in association with it in order to remain sustainable and continue to play a dominant role in Mauritius mixed economy. The role of R,D and E in attaining the targets set is discussed and the priorities identified are strategic research, extension and support to development. | |
