Abstract (AB)On account of the continuing shortage of labour for cane harvesting, it is quite obvious that for the survival of the Mauritian sugar industry, the introduction of m echanical harvesting on an experimental basis has become a necessity. Adequate field conditions are essential for the efficient operation of harvesters. As it takes a long time to get fields suitably prepared, it is considered that a start on field modification for harvesting be made forthwith. Guidelines for field preparation are presented.
