Abstract (AB)The study estimates the genetic variability in the plant cane and the first ratoon crops of 154 sugarcane clones grown under a wet and a dry environment. The genetic and phenotypic coefficients of variation, the heribatibily, the genetic advance, and the repeatability were determined for nine traits. The stalk number, cane yield and sugar yield showed the largest expected genetic advance. Some traits showed better expected genetic advance in one environment, some in another, and some were indifferent. Field brix and kilobrix were good estimators of industrial recoverable sucrose content of the cane and sugar per hectare respectively. Large differences between the sites show that stalk height and stalk diameter are very variable. Phenotypic correlations show that it should be possible to select genotypes with high cane and sugar yield, sucrose content, stalk number and stalk height. in both zones, a higher portion of cane yield was attributed to a combination of characters than to any single character.
