Abstract (AB)Research over several years has led to the formulation of a policy for integrated control of yellow spot disease, which causes losses in the profusely-flowering variety Saipan 17 in Mauritius. The various aspects of this policy, which is being successfully applied, are discussed. The use of resistant varieties is the most important measure and replacement of susceptible varieties must be given priority in environments most favourable for epiphytotics. The requirements for screening new varieties for resistance are given. Assessment must be done on flowered stalks in which the disease is most severe, and the potential of varieties to flower must be taken into consideration. As changes can occur in the resistance of varieties under cultivation, complementary measures must be taken to reduce losses in them pending their replacement. Sucrose loss is reduced by harvesting such varieties later than usual. This practice is particularly useful in a profusely-flowering variety because it also reduces the frequency of flowering. Two aerial sprays of Benomyl at the rate of 270 g a.i. per hectare may reduce infection by about 50 per cent and give profitable returns. Spraying with ripeners may also improve sucrose in infected Saipan 17 and a spraying schedule involving a first spray of fungicide followed by a combined spray of both chemicals may give the best response under conditions favourable to yellow spot.
