Abstract (AB)The author reviews the economics of fertilization in sugar cane production. The effect of insufficient nitrogen fertilization on cane yield is obvious. On the other hand excessive N fertilization is uneconomical and constitutes a waste as N cannot be stocked in the soil. The author therefore stresses the importance of precise N fertilization based on foliar diagnosis data. These data coupled with field responses to N in post-release trials have enabled the author to determine the needs in N of the two recommended varieties B 37172 and Ebène 1/37 on the basis of the initial nitrogen index.
