Abstract (AB)The leafminer Liriomyza trifolii has, since 1980, been a major pest of potatoes in Mauritius. After a period of extensive chemical control, a program of integrated pest management was initiated in 1985, comprising improved cultural practices , biological control, more resistant varieties and recommendations for more appropriate chemicals. Natural enemies, imported from Réunion Island and Peru, have in some cases become established. Clones received from the International Potato Centre in Peru are being examined for their reaction to leafminer damage. Irrational use of insecticides does present a problem but there seems to be a definite trend towards the use of products more in line with the policy of protection of the environment. Thus, insect growth regulators are becoming more popular while botanical insecticides are being tested. In August 1992, a new leafminer, L. huidobrensis, was discovered in Mauritius, damaging potato and other crops. Preliminary data on this new pest are given.
