| Intercropping of sugarcane with a Spanish-type groundnut variety is already widespread in Mauritius. Trials were laid down in plant and ratoon sugar cane at two sites to investigate the effects of three factors on the productivity and profitability of intercropping sugar cane with groundnut. A Valencia-type groundnut variety was tested. The groundnut density was increased three-fold in plant cane and was doubled in ratoon cane. In order to accommodate the higher groundnut densities, the cane planting pattern was changed from the normal uniform spacing to paired rows. Pairing of cane rows led to a reduction in the sugar yield of plant and ratoon cane. This finding raises doubts about the usefulness of the practice. Intercropping of plant and ratoon sugar cane with groundnut gave higher gross profit margins than sole cropping of sugar cane. However, increasing the groundnut density beyond the presently recommended levels of the 31,250 plants per hectare in ratoon cane and 62,500 plants per hectare in plant cane was of almost no additional benefit. This arose because the yield of groundnut was not proportional to its density. Moreover, at the highest density, groundnut depressed the yield of plant cane, probably as a result of competition for light. Intercropping of sugar cane with the Valencia-type groundnut variety was slightly but consistently, more profitable than with the Spanish-type variety. | |
