| Sugar production in the year 2000 has been affected to a large extent by the drought conditions which prevailed in 1999 and persisted up to January 2000. The northern and western sectors were particularly affected by the dry conditions. Cane and sugar production as well as cane and sugar yields, were inferior in 2000 as compared to 1998. As a result of the "clean cane" campaign launched during the year, a marked improvement in juice purity and in sugar extraction was obtained. However, profuse flowering resulted in pith formation and reduced cane weiht particularly in varieties M 695/69 and M 1176/77. the variety situation reveals the predominance of five major varieties, R 570, M 3035/66, M 1658/78, M 695/69 and M 52/78, which occupied 81 per cent of the cane area harvested. The M 1394/86, M 1400/86 and R 579, released in 2000, have confirmed their good performance in their respective zones of adaptation. However, R 579 has shown susceptibility to yellow spot and gumming. Of the promising varieties, M 2024/88 and M 2256/88 depicted wide adaptation and confirmed their high sucrose content whereas M 3014/78 seemed better adapted to the superhumid zone. A new variety, M 1186/86, was released for large-scale cultivation in humid (low altitude) and subhumid, irrigated and non-irrigated zones. It is a high yielding variety with average sucrose and fairly high fibre content, performs well in ratoons and has shown tolerance to drought. | |
