Abstract (AB)The soil moisture environments which develop beneath sugar cane drip irrigated during the day, and at night, are examined and compared. Adjacent field plots were irrigated according to a weekly calculation of cane potential evaporation (ET crop), one receiving irrigation water from 07h00 each day and the other from 18h00 of the same day. The soil moisture environment under each treatment was monitored using two-dimensional arrays of tensiometers across the middle cane row. The data revealed a diurnal cycling of matric potential on both plots due to irrigation applications and root water abstractions. The amplitude of this oscillation in potential was much greater beneath the night irrigated plot. Considerable differences in the size and duration of the wet bulb were also seen, showing that the timing of irrigation applications has a significant effect on the soil moisture environment beneath the crop. It is suggested that judicious timing of irrigation applications could become a means of controlling the soil moisture environment, creating optimum conditions for plant growth, and minimising drainage and evaporation losses.
