Abstract (AB)An increase in armyworm Mythimna spp. populations has been observed following the introduction of mechanized sugarcane harvesting and the adoption of trash blanketing. Severe infestations have resulted in total defoliation. Trash removal and insecticide application to eliminate residual larval populations did not improve cane regrowth after damage. Indoxacarb, cyhalothrin and thiodicarb controlled the sugarcane armyworm, but these chemicals affected two species of trash caterpillars Athetis ignava and Simplicia pannalis which feed on dry cane leaves. Larval parasitism was on average 16 percent and the fungal pathogens Metarhizium anisopliae and Paecilomyces sp. were encountered on a few larvae and pupae. With a larger area machine-harvested, the incidence of sugarcane armyworms is likely to increase. Hence, the need to develop a sound pest management strategy with minimal use of insecticides to avoid jeopardising the already well established biological control of the main sugarcane pests in Mauritius.
