A thresher designed to deglume the caryopses of sugarcane is described. Its use enables the sowing of seeds from viable crosses, rather than the sowing of fuzz, and with pre-sowing germination tests the required number of seedlings may be obtained by sowing a given quantity of seeds. The technique results in a saving of about 75 per cent in labour, time and space during greenhouse sowings. Its other advantages, including greater ease of storing seeds, are enumerated. | |
