Variations in the behaviour of the tolerant carrier variety M147/44 with respect to gumming disease in Mauritius, from year to year and in different climatic zones are attributed to fluctuations in climatic factors, especially rainfall and himidity, temperature and wind speed. Maximum infection can be expected with above-normal rainfall and high windspeed during the growing season, followed by sub-normal temperature and rainfall during the cool maturing season. The cultivation of such varieties is thus undesirable. Systemic infection in this variety is characterized by symptoms of leaf chlorosis which are not corrrelated with excessive deterioration in the stalks. This symptom appears to be an inherent character of certain varieties, suggesting tolerance. Symptoms of chlorosis are more abundant after harvest and result from knife infection in young shoots cut above their growing points. A reduction in yield of 23.2 per cent was observed following such infection. Another important aspect of knife infection is the carry-over of the disease from one crop to the next. Tentative explanations are given for the mechanism of the toxic effect of the strain of the bacterium causing chlorosis. | |
