Abstract (AB)In a long season crop of the two sugar cane varieties S17 and M351/57, flowering stalks in a natural population had higher fresh weight and sugar yields at anthesis than vegetative stalks, produced artificially by means of photoperiodic treatments. In variety S17, these differences gradually decreased and six months after anthesis there were no differences in fresh weight or sugar yields. On the other hand, in v ariety M351/57, the differences in sugar yields were still present at final harvest. The possible interactions of age of crop and climatic conditions of the effect of flowering on yield are discussed.
