Abstract (AB)Direct evidence is provided showing that the retention of anions, e.g. phosphate, by hydrolytic reaction products of Al is enhanced and not re duced when those products are precipitated in the presence of low molecular weight biochemicals of common occurrence in nature. This is of fundamental importance to understanding the transport and fate of nutrients and pollutant anions in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
