| The infectivity of three isolates of streak virus from naturally infected sugarcane, maize and the grass Coix lacryma-jobi Linn. on several varieties of sugarcane was studied by transmission tests with the vector Cicadulina mbila (Naude). The existence of different strains of the virus virulent to sugarcane was revealed. The sugarcane strain caused identical symptoms on four varieties, characterized by very fine short chlorotic streaks. The maize and Coix strains caused severe and permanent infection in varieties H 44-3098 and RP 8, showing symptoms quite distinct from the sugarcane strain with longer, broader and more widely spaced stripes. On variety H 53-263, both strains caused very mild symptoms and infection with the maize strain was not permanent. Infection with the Coix strain was in general more severe than with the maize strain. The sugarcane strain from Mauritius appeared to differ slightly from those infecting cane in certain African countries. It failed to infect five varieties susceptible to the disease in South Africa. Also agar gel immuno-diffusion tests using crude leaf sap or partially purified virus extracts, showed no reaction between the Mauritius cane strain antigen with antiserum to the sugarcane streak virus from Kenya. | |
