Abstract (AB)Maize cultivation in every inter-row and every second inter-row of plant cane was studied in three locations, in trials based on combinations of 3 maize densities and 4 fertilizer levels. Analysis of the data showed that planting maize in every inter-row significantly reduced sugar cane yields, but when planted in every second inter-row maize had no adverse effects on sugar cane yields. The results indicated that planting an early-maturing hybrid maize in every second inter-row of plant cane at a density of about 14,220 plants/ha with a fertilization of 52 kg N, 25 kg P2O5, 44 kg K2O/ha would be the most profitable. A second experiment was set up to assess the productivity of the hybrid maize and its effects on cane yield, when the cereal was planted in single row or double rows in every second inter-row of plant cane (M377/56 and S17) growing at two different row spacings (160 cm x 160 cm, 227 cm x 93 cm). Cane sugar yields were not affected by the maize intercrop, and maize yields as high as 3,200 - 3540 kg/ha were obtained with double rows of maize planted in every 227 cm cane inter-row. Cane varietal and spacing effects on sugar cane yields were also discussed.
