Abstract (AB)A series of drip irrigation trials was laid down by the Institute of Hydrology and the Mauritius Sugar Industry Research Institute in the north of Mauritius in April 1983. Results from these trials show that, when compared to other methods of irrigation, drip irrigation increases cane yields and saves water. However, these benefits are only realized if drip schemes are designed and managed properly. Recommendations are given for the design and management of drip irrigation schemes for sugarcane based on the experimental results of the trials carried out in Mauritius on the Belle Vue Sugar Estate.
