Abstract (AB)Following a brief history of sugarcane breeding in Mauritius during the past 100 years, 37 varieties cultivated in Mauritius, of which 31 have been bred and released by the Mauritius Sugar Industry Research Institute since 1953, are described. In addition to concise botanical descriptions and notes on general appearance, agronomic performance and disease and pest resistance, a series of 5 colour photographs is provided for each variety showing the main distinguishing botanical characters (internodes, buds, auricles, dewlaps and ligules). A brief historical background summarizing the agronomic importance of the older varieties, the role played by the more recent ones and their possible exploitation in the future is given for each variety. The genealogy of the varieties is also presented at the end of the book. As the book is intended to help planters and breeders to identify these varieties, botanical characteristics considered as the most useful for this purpose are highlighted with due regard to variations under different environments.
