Abstract (AB)Yield losses caused by the yellow spot disease (Mycovellosiella koepkei) were assessed in four trials conducted in ratoon fields of cane variety R570 in different localities with varying altitude and rainfall. Fungicide treated plots were compared to unsprayed ones and the adverse effect of the disease was assessed on parameters sucrose content, cane and sugar yields. The disease was damaging at all sites but statistically significant differences in cane and sugar yields were obtained at Eau Bleue, the site with highest rainfall and altitude. Epidemiological studies at ten sites infive sectors from January to September revealed that initiation of infection occurred in late January and early February with a peak in June after which the disease fell to a very low level in September. It is concluded that variety R570 should not be cultivated in areas prone to yellow spot infection especially in the wet uplands of Mauritius.
