Abstract (AB)Prior to the introduction of Thrips palmi Karny into Mauritius, most members of the order Thysanoptera were considered as minor pests. The only species studied were the sugar cane thrips, Fulmekiola serrata, and the onion thrips, Thrips tabaci. The literature review part of this project gives an overview of the order Thysanoptera and briefs on the most commonly occurring thysanopterans with some taxonomic features. A list of the species recorded to date in Mauritius is given. The experimental part, concerns mainly Thrips palmi Karny. Various methods of rearing have been tried and are discussed. The life cycle, fecundity and host preference were studied on Solanum melongena (egg plants), Solanum tuberosum (potato), Phaseolus vulgaris (bean), Cucumis sativus (cucumber), Solanum nigrum and Bidens pilosa. A high fecundity (average 135.17) has been noted on P. vulgaris but no difference in longevity has been noted. B. pilosa, though being capable of maintaining adults for long periods did not favour oviposition (a low fecundity in order of 1.9 was noted). The preferred host seems to be C. pepo and the least S. tuberosum and B. pilosa. The intraplant distribution on potatoes were studied in the fields and a preference for middle leaves was observed.
