Abstract (AB)Analysis of sugar cane yield responses to potassium (K) fertilization showed that in soils with more than 0.50me*K/100g, the yield benefit was negligible. In those soils high in available K, more than 300 kg K2O/ha was recovered by sugar cane even when no K was added. The efficiency of K fertilizer utilization by sugar cane rarely exceeded 50 per cent and was as low as 20 per cent in soils where available K exceeded 0.50 me/100g. Interpretation of soil trest K value through the maintenance philosophy is no longer justified in the face of evidence which dispels the fear that the sufficiency approach would mine the soils of available nutrients. Accordingly, in formulating K fertilizer recommendations to sugar cane, due consideration should be given to the inherent capacity of the soils to satisfy a substantial portion of the K needs of sugar cane
