Abstract (AB)Laboratory incubation studies with N-15 labelled urea conducted on representative soils of Belgium and Cameroon indicated that 70-85 percent of the fertilizer urea was hydrolysed within 2 to 4 days. The organic carbon content influenced the rate of hydrolysis. Nitrification of ammonium to nitrate was only noted in a Andosol of volcanic ash origin under the experimental conditions. N-15 data showed that in this soil 30 per cent of the applied N was found as nitrate after 30 days of incubation. Immobilized N accounted for 12-28 per cent of the applied N in the Belgian soils and 37 per cent in the Cameroon soils. The total recovery of fertilizer N added to the soil was between 96 per cent and 99 per cent indicating a loss of 1 to 4 per cent presumably due to ammonia volatilization.
