Abstract (AB)	The selection and breeding programme for general adaptation or for specific ones is overviewed. Varieties having reached various stages of the selection programme are analysed as to their cane and sugar yield potential and also as to their reaction to the various important diseases met in Mauritius. The desirability of having high fibre cane for energy purposes is also discussed.
