Abstract (AB)A brief review of the role of the Mauritius Herbarium along with large herbaria overseas is made. Botanical studies, both systematic and ecological, have been pursued for two centuries on the Mascarene flora and provide us with essential data for plant genetic resources documentation and evaluation. These works have culminated in the recent taxonomic revision of the Mascarene flora as presented in the "Flore des Mascareignes". The 25,000 herbarium specimens of regional provenance including numerous types, together with some invaluable works on the local flora provide the scientific world with original, authentic and precious information for research, education and nature conservation.
