Abstract (AB)Mauritius has two methods of producing onion: by small bulbs or by the transplantation of seedlings. Both methods are labour intensive and costly. Trials comparing direct-seeded to transplanted onion had two main objectives: to evaluate different weed control scenarios and compare crop yield. It was found that direct seeded was far better than transplanted onion because of a better yield, a lower labour requirement and a shorter crop cycle. Chemical weed control with oxyfluorfen or oxadiazon was superior to hand weeding.
