Abstract (AB)Most breeding stations maintain a collection of foreign varieties or adopt a dynamic variety exchange policy. The use and the contribution of these foreign varieties in the development of elite varieties have rarely been assessed. A study was conducted on the partial genealogy of parent varieties whose progeny were selected and included in the final phase of the Mauritian variety development programme during the past twenty years (1978-1997). This study revealed that 52 percent of the different genotypes used as immediate parents for the varieties in final phase trials were of foreign origin and 64 percent of the varieties came from combinations that included one foreign parent in the immediate ancestry. About an equal proportion of varieties (15 percent) came from foreign x foreign and local x local bi-parental combinations whereas twice as many came from foreign x local combinations. An additional 17 percent and 20 percent of varieties originated from foreign x polycross and local x polycross combinations respectively. Both foreign and locally derived parents were as important in producing varieties in final phase of selection. Of the parents that have produced more than ten varieties in final phase trials twelve and seven parents were of local and foreign origin r espectively with one foreigh parent (S 17) and two locally derived parents (M 907/61, M 376/64) occurring in exceedingly high frequencies in the genealogies. An analysis at the second and third ancestry level showed that 73 per cent of the grand parents and 83 percent of the great grand parents occurring in the genealogy of final phase varieties were of foreign origin. Of the total genetic combinations performed during the past 5 years in the hybridization programme, 53 percent had at least one foreign parent whereas only 11 percent of the genetic combinations were of the foreign x foreign type as compared to 30 percent which were of the local x local type parents. From a survey of commercially important varieties produced in a number of countries world-wide 22 percent was derived from foreign x foreigh parents, 24 percent from local x local and 52 percent had at least one foreign parent in the immediate genealogy. The implications of these results in the formulation of future strategies are discussed.
