Abstract (AB)Breeding and selection programmes typically generate large amounts of data which need to be captured, organized, analysed, c1assified, searched and stored over long periods of time. In the early 1970s electronic machines were used for the first time at the Mauritius Sugar Industry Research Institute but the first "real" computer was introduced in 1975. The remarkable developments in IT over the last 25 years have led to the continuous improvement in data management systems at the Institute both in terms of speed and storage capacity. The revolutions in local and global communication networks provide the platforms for the rapid exchange and sharing of data. This presentation focuses on the development of relational databases at MSIRI for crossing and selection. The database tables form a cohesive database system through the use of a common key, namely: the variety name. The underlying programming language used is Structured Query Language (SQL). Systematic maintenance and updating are necessary to en sure the validity of the database. Customized searches and reports can easily be produced. Examples of applications are: data pertaining to the germplasm collection can be used in the crossing programme; selection rates from trials can be fed back to algorithms which control computer-aided crossing; the performance of varieties can be traced throughout the selection process; imported varieties can be traced to their current field locations; and so on.
