Abstract (AB)	A new type of maturity trial (T2-maturity) encompassing a pair of old-style T2 trials, has been designed and laid down to replace the usual T3 - maturity trials with the objective of shortening the present selection cycle. The designs of the T2 trials are lattices and those of the maturity trials are unbalanced split-plots. The T2 trials are analysed separately, their designs allowing all comparisons among pairs of varieties to be made with equal precision. Then the combined maturity trials are analysed by the method of restricted maximum likelihood (REML). The results obtained for the 1st ratoon are presented. At the completion of the 3rd ratoon, varieties will be selected for commercial release. Recommendations of their optimum harvest times will be concurrently done.
