Abstract (AB)Shortage and high cost of labour have led to the mechanization of cultural operations involved in sugar cane production in Mauritius. The presence of rocks in the soil profile and the hummocky nature of the topography are obstacles to efficient mechanization. A long term plan of rock and stone removal has been initiated at Médine Sugar Estate, where 83 per cent of arable land is described as being very rocky and stony. This plan comprises three levels of rock and stone removal, accompanied by a complete uprading of rrigation systems and field layout. Its aim is to allow the mechanization of fertilizer spreading, mechanical harvest with a chopper harvester and mechanical planting with a whole-stalk planter in view of reducing production costs. The techniques adopted and the equipment utilized are described.
