Abstract (AB)Preliminary observations have shown that substantial losses occur through the extractor fans of chopper harvesters during the cleaning process. These losses are higher in green cane harvesting than under burnt conditions. Choper harvesters equipped with variable-speed extractor fans have provided opportunities to reduce such cane loss. The influence of three extractor fan speeds (1,000 rpm, 1,200 rpm, and 1,400 rpm) on the amount of cane lost during green cane harvesting of the predominant varieties harvested mechanically was inestigated in Mauritius. The amount of cane lost through the extractors indicated that irrespective of cane variety, the optimum extractor fan speed is around 1,200 rpm, which is the currently recommended speedin green cane harvesting. This recommendation may change if the effect of the associated level of extraneous matter on sugar recovery is quantified.
