Abstract (AB)	An analysis is made on the performance of certain cane varieties planted on a large scale in 1997. The variety selection programme has been examined by three international experts and one of their main recommendations is to shorten the selection cycle. Results obtained with eight promising varieties as well as thosein final multiplication phase in nurseries, are scrutinized. Some of these varieties will most probably be released in the near future. Varieties M 96/82 and R 573 have been released in 1998 and will be distributed to all cane producers. Variety recommendations will be amended accordingly.
