Abstract (AB)The groundnut varieties, Venus and Sylvia originte from the International Crops Reseearch Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT). Teir performance was assessed in twenty-five trials planted from 1995 to 1997 in the first and second seasons, in pure stand and in interrows of plant sugar cane. Venus and Sylvia significantly outyielded the control, Cabri by 48 per cent and 43 per cent respectively. The two varieties were also more stable inyield than Cabri. Pod yield was higher in the second season and in on-farm trials, but on an equal density basis, there was no significant difference between sole cropped and intercropped groundnut. Sylvia was found by a sample on consumers to be as good as Cabri for salted nuts (Pistache salée), for boiled, or for roasted in-shell nuts. Venus was only acceptable for boiled nuts. The seeds of variety Venus are larger than those of Cabri and grading may be warranted to develop new markets.
