Abstract (AB)The trends in cane quality in Mauritius from 1960 to 1996 are examined using data from one sugar estate which has the cleanest cane and practises cane trashing before harvesting, and two factories having a high level of extraneous matter with the cane. The selection of the estates was made taking into account the island lowest and highest fibre content in cane. The parameters considered for assessing cane quality are sucrose per cent cane, fibre per cent cane, sucrose/fibre ration in cane, sucrose per cent dry matter in cane and mixed juice purity. Other measures of cane quality, such as extraneous matter in cane, suspended solids, boiling house recovery, weight of bagasse per cent cane, Clerget purity of molasses and weight of molasses at 85°Brix percent cane were studied. Sucrose lost in the by-products, e.g., bagasse, filter cake and molasses were also examined. Although it could be expensive to maintain a high level of cane cleaniliness for example by trashing the caane before harvest, it could be even more costly to process dirty cane. An economic study should therefore be undertaken to that end for each factory.
