| Herbicide Terbo (a mixture of bromoxynil and terbuthylazine) was evaluated as an alternative to hormone-type herbicides for post-emergence weed control in sugar cane. Five field trials established between 1999 and 2000 have shown that Terbo at rates varying between 0.6 and 0.9 kg a.i. ha-1 tank-mixed with tebuthiuron + atrazine @ (1.3 + 2.0) kg a.i. ha-1 or hexazinone + atrazine @ (1.3 + 0.6) kg a.i. ha-1 provides a satisfactory level of control of both annual grasses and broad-leaved weeds. The new tank-mixes were comparable to the standards tebuthiuron + atrazine + Actril-DS and hexazinone + atrazine + Actril-DS, and have shown no adverse effect on cane growth. The use of Terbo as a substitute for Actril-DS and other derivatives of 2,4-D will prove particularly advantageous in sugar cane fields situated in the vicinity of foodcrops which are susceptible to hormone-type herbicides.
