Abstract (AB)A new sugar cane variety, M 1672/90, has been released for cultivation in 2007 in the subhumid zone for mid- and lateseason harvest. This variety is fairly high-yielding with an average sucrose content that compares favourably with current commercial varieties grown in the same zone. M 1672/90 has a relatively high fibre content, 10per cent to 34per cent above that of the cultivated commercial varieties and has a potential for production of additional bagasse for co-generation. It is resistant to gumming, smut and leaf scald. However, its high susceptibility to yellow spot precludes its cultivation in the very humid areas. In the irrigated P soils (gravely/rocky), sugar yield of M 1672/90, at mid-season, was equal to or higher than M 1176/77 and M 1400/86, which are the most cultivated varieties in that zone. Under rainfed conditions, in the deep L2 soils, at mid-season harvest, productivity was also better than most control varieties but lower than R 573. At late-season harvest, in the irrigated L1 soil, its sugar productivity was superior to all the commercial control varieties. It maintains good cane yield across ratoon crops particularly under irrigated conditions. The variety has a fairly erect growth habit with a relatively high number of fairly tall cane stalks of medium diameter. It germinates well and provides good ground coverage. Flowering is fairly low to average.
