| In 2006, the total cane and sugar produced for the island amounted to 4.746 M tonnes and 504 857 tonnes respectively with an average cane and sugar productivity of 71.2 t ha-1 and 7.58 t ha-1 respectively, commercial sugar recovered per cent cane was IQ .64per cent. In general sugar productivity was slightly inferior to that of 2005 and about 12.2 per cent less than that of the reference year 2001. The lower productivity in 2006 cannot be attributed to extreme weather conditions or to biotic factors. The total area harvested in 2006 was lower than in 2005 by about 1694 ha. Compared with 2001, less than 6669 ha were harvested, representing for 2006, a shortfall of about 50 000 tonnes sugar. The variety situation showed that nine varieties had occupied nearly 89per cent of the area under cane for the miller-planters and four varieties, R 570, M 1176/77, M 1400/86 and M 695/69 are the most cultivated ones. The new varieties, R 573, R 579, M 387/85 and M 703/89 are being more readily adopted particularly in specific sectors. R 570 and M 3035/66 were still the most popular varieties among small planters whereas the medium planters were progressively adopting the new varieties. An analysis of the performance of new varieties in a series of trials indicated that M 387/85 had performed very well in B soils; M 1400/86 had confirmed its good performance in the subhumid zone; M 186l/89 had demonstrated a good potential in the very humid zone and M 703/89 had confirmed its high productivity as a early-ripening variety in the very humid and humid zone. The recently released variety M 2593/92 has shown very good potential for the subhumid areas and stability of performance across the harvest season. Among the test varieties, M 2627/92 and M 1112/94 were considered quite promising. However, M 1672/90 was recommended for release in the subhumid zone for middle- and late-season harvest. This variety has high cane and sugar yields equal to the best performing standards with enhanced fibre content and fibre yield that can be considered as a landmark for the production of bio-energy in Mauritius. The challenges facing the sugar industry such as decreasing yields in some sectors are highlighted and point to remedial actions. The development of higher yielding varieties and their rapid adoption by the entire planting community is one of the means to ensure a sustainable sugar industry. | |
