Abstract (AB)After mechanical harvesting of sugarcane was introduced in Mauritius, ridging was carried out in order to improve cutting at the bottom of stems. Surveys of personnel in sugar companies on the usefulness of this practice show that opinions are divided. Measurements of ridge profiles using a profilograph showed a great deal of irregularity in ridging, both along the ridges and throughout the field, due to the d esign of the machinery used. The measurements carried out show that ridging has not provided better quality cuts, and that this parameter is influenced by other variables such as surface rocks, cane varieties and uneven surfaces. Ridging exclusively for mechanical harvesting is not recommended. Measures to improve mechanical harvesting are proposed.
