Abstract (AB)The efficiency of the sugar cane selection programme is reviewed. An analysis is made of the adaptation of cane varieties to extreme climatic conditions such as drought and excessive rainfall. Disease diagnosis and tissue culture are the main aspects being studied in the biotechnology programme. Sugar cane varieties having reached the final selection stages are compared to those commercially exploited. The performance of the newly released variety, M1658/78, is reviewed.
