Abstract (AB)The changes brought about to the local breeding programme, as well as the present status of various projects undertaken in biotechnology are briefly enumerated. The agronomic performance of the following promising and recently released varieties are discussed. M 1551/80 and R 575 are early matured, have good cane yields and are better adapted to humid and sub-humid areas. H 657052 is high yielding with an average sucrose content and adapted to super humid areas. M 554/79 is also adapted to the super humid zone but is an average yielder with high sucrose content early in the season. M 2229/80 is high yielding with a low sucrose content. M 1176/77 and M 261/78 are both adapted to the dry, non-irrigated areas and have high cane yields and average sucrose content. M 1176/77 is slightly susceptible to smut. M 2350/79 ripens early in the season, has high cane yield and is adapted to the super humid zone. The two recently released varieties M 52/78 and M 1658/78 have confirmed their previous performances. M52/78 is recommended for harvest at the beginning of the crop season when its sucrose content and cane yield are high, in humid and superhumid environments. M 1658/78 is high yielding and rich especially at mid-season and late harvests. It is recommended for harvesting throughout the season in superhumid, humid and irrigated areas. It should not be planted in the unirrigated sub-humid ares. New recommendations for planting and harvesting sugar cane varieties are made.
