Abstract (AB)A survey of virus diseases of maize present in Mauritius was carried out. Five virus diseases were sorted out by vector transmission studies, electron microscopy and/or agar gel diffusion serology. Their relative importance is discussed. Streak disease was transmitted by the vector Cicadulina mbila and its presence confirmed by serology. Apart from maize, several grasses were found affected, the existence of different host-adapted strains of the virus is being sorted out. The disease can cause important losses on the local maize variety. All foreign hybrids tested so far have shown extreme susceptibility. Infection was until recently severe only in one area where maize is continuously cultivated, but the disease is building-up with increased maize cultivation especially on the newly imported susceptible hybrids. Three virus diseases transmitted by Peregrinus maidis were sorted out. Maize mosaic virus was identified by electron microscopy of partially purified extracts. Maize line and maize stripe viruses were diagnosed on the basis of symptoms and serological tests. These three diseases are not quite important yet owing, to the resistance of the local variety but most foreign hybrids are quite susceptible. Maize dwarf mosaic virus was identified by serology and electron microscopy of partially purified extracts. The disease is of minor importance and is very rarely encountered but is believed to be more widespread, causing latent infection.
