Abstract (AB)The sugar cane variety M52/78 was recommended for commercial cultivation as from 1994. It is a semi-erect variety with average to tall canes of medium to fairly large diameter. It flowers profusely. It is a good yielding variety with high sucrose content, early in the season, adapted to the humid and superhumid environments. It outyields all commercial varieties during the first six to eight weeks of harvest in these tow environments. It is inferior to all the contro varieties when harvested late in the season owing to low cane yields then. It does not perform well in the drier environments. M52/78 is recommended for planting in B, F, H and L2 soils for harvesting at early and mid-season.
