Abstract (AB)This paper describes the application of Farming Sytems Research (FSR) methodology to the analysis of agriculture in Rodrigues. The FSR methodology is a holistic multidisciplinary approach aimed at understanding farmers' choices and strategies. It requires the active participation of farmers. The different steps of the process and the techniques in this study are explained. The process started with a review of secondary material on agriculture in Rodrigues. The techniques comprised a transect of Rodrigues, an informal survey and participatory workshops. The main outputs of the case study include the identification of three main farming systems, the classification of agricultural lands in nine zones based on agro-economic criteria, and the grouping of farmers into six types based on the relative importance of farm and off-farm income. Problems confronting agriculture have been identified and recommendations have been made at the farm and institutional levels.
