Abstract (AB)The objective of crop diversification is to maximize the use of cane lands to produce more food, both to reduce dependence on imported food and for export. Sugar cane enjoys an economic advantage over several alternative crops because it is less susceptible to cyclones and to drought and because there is a guaranteed market at negotiated prices for a large proportion of the sugar production. This explains the strategy that has been adopted whereby other crops are produced in addition to, rather that at the expense of, sugarcane. An analysis of food imports revealed that much of the food presently imported cannot be produced locally. Efforts were therefore directed to the production of a few crops, namely maize, bean, potato, groundnut, onion, garlin and selected vegetables. The production achievements and the prospects for the further development of these crops are discussed. Research needs and support measures are mentioned.
