| Sugar production in 2002 was the lowest during the past years, except for 1999, which was affected by a severe drought and , 1994 affected by cyclone Hollanda. A total of 72 264 ha were harvested and 4 870 051 tonnes cane and 520 887 tonnes of sugar were produced. Average cane yield was 67.4 t ha-1 with an extraction rate of 10.70 per cent, a fibre content of 15.71 per cent and a sugar productivity of 7.21 t ha -1. Harvest was influenced by a combination of factors such as cyclone Dina, deterioration of cane quality and an unfavourable climate. The variety situation shows the predominance of seven major varieties, R 570, M 3035/66, M 695/69, M 1176/77, M 52/78, M 1658/78 and R 575, which occupied 88 per cent of the cane area harvested. In trials, varieties M 387/85 and M 1400/86, released in 1999 and 2000, respectively, have confirmed their good performance in the superhumid regions whereas productivity of M 1176/77, M 1246/84, R 573 and R 575 was very encouraging in their respective areas of adaptation. Of the promising varieties, M 703/89 showed a good adaptation to B-soils. An early ripening and high sucrose variety, M 2024/88, was released for large-scale cultivation in the sub-humid, irrigated zone. New strategies in connection with the genetic improvement of varieties are discussed in the perspective of rationalizing the use of resources. | |
